Weekly Update

March 6, 2016 at 10:01 pm

Good evening Sharks, this is Principal Smith with your Weekly Update. First, I want to thank all of the staff, students, and parents who came to the Northwest Fest on Saturday, at Reseda High School. If you missed it, you missed a great celebration of the fantastic schools in the Northwest District! The DPMHS booth definitely generated interest amongst middle school parents, and the volunteers from the school working the booth were wonderful!

On Thursday, March 10th, DPMHS will host Open House, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. An assortment of Food Trucks will be on hand from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, and proceeds will be shared with the Advanced Journalism students to help with their fundraising for the Spring Journalism convention. At 5:00 pm, there will be a GATE meeting for parents of students identified as Gifted and Talented, the meeting will be held in Room 12 with Ms. Hicks.

World’s Finest Chocolate sales continue and the funds raised will be dedicated to The Pearl Post and this year’s Yearbook.

March 10th, Thursday, is also the last day for students to register for AP Exams. See Ms. Torres if you have questions. Students interested in taking the Spanish AP exam must sign-up at the Counseling table outside Ms. Torres’ office.

The Math Department is holding its Annual Pi Day Contest on Monday, March 14th. Sign-up for the Pi activities with your Math teacher.

Seniors, make sure you are checking the Senior Activities Info Board just outside the Textbook Room. All Senior activities are posted and updated in this location.

Looking ahead, Spring break is from March 21 - 25, and Monday, March 28th is Cesar Chavez Day. School resumes on Tuesday, March 29th.

And now a few reminders for all students: Students are expected to arrive at all classes on time, with their materials, and prepared to learn. As the days ahead get warmer, students should dress for school success, keeping all undergarments covered, mid-drifts covered, and hats limited to DPMHS Logo wear, BCCHS athletic caps, solid black, turquoise, or black and turquoise without logos. Following these dress codes allows less distractions and minimizes reminders by staff to students. Jupiter Grades, the online gradebook system, continues to be a vital source to keep informed of your progress and grades in each class. Check Jupiter regularly for changes, and if you need a password or to reset your account, see Ms. Torres, Ms. Bootel, or Ms. Smith.

That’s it for this week, see you tomorrow!

Metro Petition

The San Fernando Valley is home to 1.8 million people and the most popular bus rapid transit line in the country, serving 29,000 people each day.

Yet we lack a Metro customer service center in the San Fernando Valley. At a Metro customer service center, riders can access:

  • Reduced Fare Applications
    • Senior
    • Student
    • Disabled

Weekly Update

February 21, 2016 at 8:02 pm

Good Evening Sharks, this is Principal Smith with your Weekly Update. First, and foremost, I want to commend all staff, students, and parents for their prompt response and trust during the lockdown at school on Friday. I ask that each parent discuss with your student the importance of not joking around about threats directed at a school, about guns, violence, etc… School shootings are not funny, they are not a joke, and they should not be made the topic of jokes. LAUSD and I take all threats seriously and will take immedicate action anytime there is mention of a possible act of violence. We have a great school, a safe school, and it is through our team efforts that our students understand the expectations of all students at Daniel Pearl.

Here is the line-up for this week:

On Monday, Feb 22, Mr. Rick Chambers, News Anchor from KTLA, Channel 5, will be here to speak to our Newspaper and Media Broadcast students.

On Feb. 23rd, Raul from LA VAlley College will be here to help students complete their community college FAFSA. Sign-up for help outside Ms. Torres office. A fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen is being held, at the Encino location, 16101Ventura Blvd., Encino. You must have a flyer for our school to get credit, but flyers are available at the school. Help us get to the Journalism Convention this spring!

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, all students will attend a performance presented by Kaiser Permanente, “What Goes Around”. All students were given a field trip slip for this event, as we will be walking to Birmingham High School to use their auditorium. All students must have a signed field trip slip turned in no later than 8:00 am on Wednesday, Feb. 24th.

On Thursday, Feb. 25th, the Spoken Word auditions for the program, “Get Lit” will be held at lunch in Room 14 with Mr. Baer.

On Friday, Feb. 26th, DPMHS is at Skateland from 8-11 pm! Skateland is located at 18140 Parthenia Street, Northridge. Admission is $10, skates are $6, and parents can enter for $2.

Looking ahead: DPMHS will be attending the Northwest Fest, a showcase of Northwest Schools, on Saturday, March 5th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at Reseda High School. This is a great opportunity to encourage students to get to know our school and apply for a magnet spot!
