Principal’s Message for April 2010

April 13, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our spring semester is flying by!  In February, we received the official results of the WASC school visit (Western Accreditation of Schools & Colleges) and we were given the maximum number of years for a new school.  We are accredited through June 2013 and another WASC visit will take place at that time.

Other rewarding news is that Daniel Pearl High School was chosen to have a student represent Local District 1 at Superintendent Cortines’ State of the District Address at Belmont High School on February 16.  Patricia Esquina, senior, attended this event with LD 1 Superintendent Jean Brown and learned about the many academic successes of LAUSD.

More good news—Ms. Chavira, Ms. Stone and Mr. Schaffter wrote a grant proposal to support our journalism and communications program and have been awarded $30,000 from UCLA.  Stay tuned to hear about the wonderful program that is planned for next year!

The next few months will be jammed with required testing.  Please supervise your teenagers to make sure that they get enough sleep and plenty of healthy food.   This will make sure that they are ready to do their best on the Fitnessgram (physical tests) , the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam), AP (Advanced Placement) Exams, the CST (California Standards Test).

An upcoming tentative change for 2010-2011 that can provide extra instructional support will be a new school calendar.  Next year Local District 1 high schools are applying to begin the school year three weeks earlier starting on August 17, 2010 and ending on June 6, 2011.  This calendar would allow the first semester to end before the start of winter break and provide three additional weeks of instruction before testing begins in the second semester.  This will be discussed at all of our school council meetings so please plan to attend.

Those of you whose sons and daughters are seniors are probably already experiencing the sense of time flying by.  This will be a very busy semester for the seniors as they finish their final academic year of high school in the midst of testing, academic assignments and senior activities, prom night, graduation and Grad Night. You may also notice some irritability or impatience on their part.  Just know that your adolescents are going through one of the major passages of life—the transition from high school to college or jobs—and that although this is an exciting time, it can also be a time of uncertainty and anxiety.

Finally, we need the involvement of all parents to help build this school.  There are many ways to be supportive—attending council meetings, volunteering with school events, supporting our yearbook and newspaper by purchasing ads or even making monetary donations to Daniel Pearl Magnet High School. Our PTSA Membership Drive is continuing.  PTSA is our major fundraiser and it is only $6 per person, so please join!

Thank you.
