DPMHS Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of Daniel Pearl’s Death

February 1, 2012 at 7:28 pm

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the death of Daniel Pearl, we are starting a digital “Chain of Pearls” on Facebook in which each pearl represents an action that an individual will take to build a better world. Please add a pearl by telling us about one act that you will commit to that promotes peace, tolerance, freedom, or respect for others regardless of their race, creed or background. Our goal is to have people from every country in the world add pearls to our global chain.

The next issue of the school newspaper, The Pearl Post, will feature a special section dedicated to stories about Daniel Pearl, the role of investigative reporting, and ethics in journalism. Videos and podcasts of students discussing their hopes, dreams and view of the world will also be featured during the next several weeks.

The activities will conclude on February 21st with a panel of reporters, photojournalists and broadcasters taking questions from students on the topic “Journalists in Harm’s Way.”  The panelists will also discuss the meaning and implications of the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act, signed into law in May 2010 by President Barack Obama.
